Bookgem Book Holder - iPad Stand, Kindle, Tablet, & eBook HolderWhy buy a single purpose book holder, or a stand made just for an iPad or Kindle or Nook? The BookGem is the one device that works brilliantly for virtually any paper book or ebook or tablet computer you may have now - or in the future. The BookGem is a revelation to any reader tired of having to constantly hold up their reading material. The patented design is unlike any of the flimsy wire or simplistic pillow-type book supports. Spring-loaded page clips hold the book and pages in place, while allowing for quick and easy page turning. These same clips also have rubber tips, with rubber pads behind, to hold your ebook or iPad firmly but gently so it can't slip out. The clever folding support legs allow for multiple angles, and even allow the book to be positioned sideways extremely comfortable reading in bed. An iPad or ebook can be held in portrait or landscape orientation, and can even be grasped from the side to allow one leg to be varied for an adjustable angle. The charging cord and buttons are not obstructed. The positive attachment means the stand goes where your book or tablet goes - easily carry it around with one hand. Have a nice leather cover for your iPad or eBook? The BookGem will still work wonderfully with the cover open and attached. Plus, the whole thing folds up like a pair of glasses to drop into your pocket or purse. Ideal for students, reading at mealtime, taking notes, studying at the computer. Also makes a great cookbook holder, or instructional book holder while working on projects, sewing and needlepoint, machinery repair, etc. (Note that some large textbooks and very heavy books will overwhelm the small pocketable book holder.) A full video product tour is now available on our Youtube Channel. And visit our website at BookGem for great photos, instructions, and much more info.
The Beatles 1Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley
Radio Silence: A Selected Visual History of American Hardcore MusicRadio Silence: A Selected Visual History of American Hardcore Music is a tribute to the innocence and accidental sophistication that jump-started the look and sound of hardcore music.
Hardcore music emerged just after the first wave of punk rock in the late 1970s. American punk kids who loved the speed and attitude of punk took hold of its spirit, got rid of the “live fast, die young” mind-set and made a brilliant revision: hardcore. The dividing line between punk and hardcore music was in the delivery: less pretense, less melody, and more aggression. This urgency seeped its way from the music into the look of hardcore. There wasn’t time to mold your liberty spikes or shine your Docs, it was jeans and T-shirts, Chuck Taylors and Vans. The skull and safety-pin punk costume was replaced by hi-tops and hooded sweatshirts. Jamie Reid’s ransom note record cover aesthetic gave way to black-and-white photographs of packed shows accompanied by bold and simple typography declaring things like: "The Kids Will Have Their Say", and "You’re Only Young Once."
Radio Silence documents the ignored space between the Ramones and Nirvana through the words and images of the pre-Internet era where this community built on do-it-yourself ethics thrived. Authors Nathan Nedorostek and Anthony Pappalardo have cataloged private collections of unseen images, personal letters, original artwork, and various ephemera from the hardcore scene circa 1978-1993. Unseen photos lay next to hand-made t-shirts and original artwork brought to life by the words of their creators and fans. Radio Silence includes over 500 images of unseen photographs, illustrations, rare records, t-shirts, and fanzines presented in a manner that abandons the aesthetic clichés normally employed to depict the genre and lets the subject matter speak for itself. Contributions by Jeff Nelson, Dave Smalley, Walter Schreifels, Cynthia Connolly, Pat Dubar, Gus Peña, Rusty Moore, and Gavin Ogelsby with an essay by Mark Owens.
No 4This fine band's powerful music has been often overshadowed by singer Scott Weiland's well-documented drug and legal troubles. Not to mention that STP's 1992 debut, Core, was dismissed by critics as "Seattle lite." Nonetheless, STP has managed to make four noteworthy albums, No. 4 being the latest in their solid and cohesive body of work. No. 4 is not groundbreaking, but the quartet's aggressive, dynamic hard rock is emotion-packed and timeless. Not as hit-heavy as its predecessors, No. 4 is nevertheless strong and diverse. On the gentler side, there's the lilting '60s-influenced "I Got You" and "Atlanta," which is almost Doors-like in its dreamy mood. Heavier fare includes the midtempo heavy riffing opener "Down" and the winning but not-so-subtly titled "Sex and Violence," which matches an aggressive, linear feel with a cool punk vibe. At 42 minutes, the only thing wrong with No. 4 is that there's not enough of it. --Katherine Turman
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning ThiefMythology and the modern world collide in this epic quest for justice by Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), your basic below-average, misfit student whose family life is a mess and who's misunderstood by everyone except his best friend, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson). A voice warns that everything is about to change as Percy enters the New Roman and Greek Art Gallery on a school field trip, and, indeed, it does. Percy's substitute teacher morphs into a mythical beast and tries to attack him, and it's revealed that Percy is the son of Poseidon, and a true demigod. Percy also discovers that Grover is really a satyr--half-human, half-goat--and his sworn protector, and that one of his teachers is a centaur--half-horse, half-man--who's more committed to Percy's education than he could ever have imagined. On top of it all, Percy is the prime suspect in the recent theft of Zeus's lightning bolt and is being hunted by the gods. Following these shocking revelations, Percy is taken to a special training camp to learn to control and use his exceptional powers, and in the process, his mother is imprisoned by Hades. Against all advice, Percy, his protector Grover, and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), daughter of Athena, leave camp to rescue Percy's mother from the underworld. Their quest is extremely dangerous and puts them squarely in the path of Medusa (Uma Thurman), with her venomous hair and gaze that turns people to stone. The three also battle a five-headed, fire-breathing beast and visit a Las Vegas casino patrons never leave, and finally they find themselves deep in the underworld, at the mercy of the unpredictable Persephone, wife of Hades. Somehow, Percy must both convince the gods he did not steal Zeus's lightning and prevent a war of the gods that could potentially destroy the entire world. Based on the books by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is an exciting action film rich with ancient mythology, yet set squarely in the 21st century. Enriched by strong special effects and some potently disturbing images, it is a powerful story about family, trust, determination, and love. (Ages 11 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Complete SeriesMAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.THE COMPLETE SERIE - DVD Movie
Legend of Zelda: Complete Animated SeriesInspired by the popular 1980s Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda: The Complete Animated Series contains 13 enjoyable, self-deprecating adventures featuring haughty Princess Zelda and her frustrated, would-be suitor and courageous ally, Link. Guardians of the Triforce of Wisdom, a powerful object that sits, curiously unguarded, in Zelda's castle, the stuck-up princess and grousing Link are forever fending off assaults by the evil Ganon, a sort of underworld demon. Ganon wants the Triforce of Wisdom because he possesses a similar Triforce--together, the magical items would make him all-powerful. While there's a lot of sword-and-sorcery action, the tone of Legend of Zelda's short pieces is unmistakably comic, driven by a constant and unrelieved romantic tension between the two leads. Link is constantly saving Zelda's hide, ever-hopeful of a kiss, while Zelda keeps him on tenterhooks, leading him right to the brink of satisfaction and then well, maybe next time. Among the best episodes is "The White Knight," in which Zelda's infatuation with a vain, preening demon-slayer sends an irritated Link packinguntil the interloper refuses to rescue Zelda because he might get his clothes dirty. Each episode features the original Mario Brothers introduction from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. --Tom Keogh
